A Guide to Handling Fish.

Always take the utmost of care when handling your catch.Use an unhooking mat to lay the fish on,making sure there are no sharp objects underneath. Also make sure everything is wet before use and handling i.e. hands, nets, mat, sling etc. Minimise the amount of time the fish is out of the water by having everything you need close to hand,i.e. discorger, weighing scales, camera etc dont leave the fish while you wonder about looking for the items mentioned.Covering its head with a wet cloth or net will also minimise the amount of stress keeping it calm and stopping it from flapping about.
If the fish is deep hooked and the hook cannot be reached, then cut the line as close to the throat as possible and release it straight away. The hook should not harm the fish.
When releasing, support it carefully to allow it to find its bearings and just let it kick off on its own.

NEVER THROW IT BACK.

Fish Anatomy.

Fish have much the same sensory system as humans with the exception of speech of course.Their eye sight is limited due to the eyes being positioned either side of the head limiting the amount of forward vision to a small area. Its also said that their vision is somewhat blurred forcing them to rely on their other senses. Their hearing it exceptional they are able to pick up sensitive vibrations and movements in the water allowing them to keep one step ahead of any enemies (and anglers). The two nostrels on the snout give them quite a good sense of smell allowing them to pick up the aromer of food. Some fish have barbules, these act very much like the human tongue. They use these to feel and sense food.
